A heritage of craft passed through generations

Founded in 1977 by Donald Frank Woolley, our company began as a small workshop in Gladstone, Stoke-on-Trent, dedicated to creating high quality ceramic moulds from the heart of the potteries.

Frank first learned the technique of press moulds from his father in Australia at age 14 (1950). His desire to learn more then grew his talents to cast moulds, and on his return to Stoke-on-Trent in 1955, he began working on the potbanks as an apprentice, learning everything there was to know about the pottery industry. This sparked his passion for wanting to create his own business. In 1977, that’s what he did. Frank started with a vision of showcasing craftsmanship, innovation, and reliability, and soon became renowned as a master of precision mould-making.

From small workshop to global recognition

Blending tradition with innovation, our company gained notoriety, and Ceramic 77 began supplying moulds to ceramic manufacturers across the country. Over the years, Frank built not only a successful business but also lasting relationships with his customers and those he worked alongside, many becoming lifelong friends. His warm personality and dedication to his craft earned the respect of many and solidified his belief that good business was built on good relationships.

With success came the need for more space. Frank made the decision to expand our production and workspace to accommodate the increasing demand. Moving to Ayshford Street, Stoke-on-Trent, in 1984. There, he built on his reputation for quality and reliability and established a strong presence both in the UK and overseas. As our business grew, so did the team. Frank’s son, Simon, began to learn the ropes. Under his father’s guidance, he learned the art of mould making and gained first-hand experience in the skill and dedication behind every mould. From there, Simon spent countless hours in the workshop, watching and learning as his father shaped the moulds that would further build their reputation.

Moving to Sutherland Street, Stoke-on-Trent, in 1991, our business flourished and Simon’s responsibilities grew. Frank took great pride in teaching his son the precision and patience required for quality mould making, as his father did. Simon had a deep understanding of the craft and was now being led to run the business. Collaborating with Royal Doulton, Wedgwood, Emma Bridgewater and the Royal Collection and expanding its reach internationally meant a bigger space was once again necessary.

Their success led them to our current location, City Works, Stoke-on-Trent, in 2007. Since then, we have continued to produce high-quality products and specialise in bespoke mould making.

Frank sadly passed in September of 2020, leaving the company in the capable hands of his son, Simon. Carrying forward his father’s legacy, Simon continues to guide our company with the same care, quality and personal touch that customers have always known.

“At first it was daunting, but I soon realised I had nothing to worry about as my Dad had provided me with a strong foundation, a deep understanding of the craftsmanship and business acumen. It’s crazy to think that at 14 I was just cleaning the workshop for him and now I’m carrying on his legacy”
